Gilbert, AZ, was first established in 1902 by William “Bobby” Gilbert, who provided land to the Arizona Eastern Railway to construct a rail line between Phoenix and Florence, AZ. The town of Gilbert was finally incorporated in July 1920 and was predominantly a farming community as it was once known as the “Hay Capital of the World”. “Gilbert’s nickname would last from 1911 until the late 1920s and largely came about due to the rail line and the newly constructed Roosevelt Dam. However, in today’s times, Gilbert has grown into a thriving economic hub in the Greater Phoenix area. One of the largest draws to the town is the Gilbert Heritage District, which encompasses three blocks and offers a variety of restaurants and shopping for those of all tastes. For those who enjoy learning about the area’s rich history, the Gilbert Historical Museum offers multimedia exhibits commemorating Western U.S. culture.
